This week I thought I’d put together some of my favourite adverts that use magic to promote their product or service. There are some really bad ones out there (maybe I’ll do another post about them) but here are what I think are some of the best.
Dynamo Pepsi Max
This stunt by Dynamo looks as if it could just be a scene from his magician impossible show. But, if you look closely, you’ll see that it’s just an advert for Pepsi. He did a few different videos with them but I think this London bus one is my favourite.
Turkish Airlines Safety Video – Zach King
If you’ve haven’t checked out Zach King’s Instagram then you’ve really missed out. He mixes magic with some very good post-production video editing skills to create some hilarious and fooling illusions. He’s teamed up with a lot of brands to advertise their products but I thought this one going over Turkish Airline’s safety procedure (that okay, isn’t really an advert) was pretty good.
o2 Magician Adverts
Check out this advert from o2 that uses great some sleight of hand and manipulation. It’s one of the few adverts I’ve seen that uses magic and a company’s product that actually works. So many of them feel so fake or forced/edited too heavily.
Michael Carbonaro Buick Advert
When researching for this post, I watched a lot of adverts that use magic. A lot of them aren’t great. They try to force the magician to use their product and most of the time it just doesn’t work at all. I love this approach from Buick who employ the services of Michael Carbonaro (one of my favourite magicians) to give their customers a bit of a shock. The reactions in this one are great!
Ben Hanlin Asda
In a similar vein to the Buick advert above is this one from Asda and Ben Hanlin. I know it can’t work every time but I think magic works much better when you do it for real with actual spectators instead of actors.
One of my favourite adverts ever is this one from Honda. It uses some incredible illusions that, even when you’ve seen it multiple times, still manage to trick your brain and fool you. It’s nice to see someone doing something without any special effects too. There’s a great video showing you behind the scenes of how they made and filmed it which is worth a watch too.
Anyway, that about wraps up my favourite adverts that use magic. Have you got any that you like that I haven’t included here? Send me an email, I’d love to check it out.
